DREAM PROJET

Project summary

Each participant from the local schools before beginning the project filled a questionnaire related to the dreams for the following-:
. Themselves
.their community
-Ireland
-The world

The group began by exploring the idea of dreams in relation to their own environment. Working with sound, video, paint & collage, specific games and performance we emphasised. Through discussion we gathered the key concepts and understandings which arose out of these process.

The participants were encouraged to look at Trocaires millennium development goals, and how these were different or similar to their own ideals for the community, Ireland and world through art the group looked at ways to achieve these goals and what /who was preventing us from achieving it

DATES: FEB-MARCH 2005

TARGET GROUP: YOUNG PEOPLE FROM LOCAL SCHOOLS IN MAYFIELD

PROJECT AIMS

  • This Project intended to heighten young peoples awareness of Trocaire Millennium Development Goals
  • To Create an environment for young people to work and particpate in creative activities together.
  • To encourage young people to look at their own life and how these goals relate to them
  • To compare by listening to case studies of young people their own age and their dreams
  • Through drama and role play look at how can these goals be achieved
  • To offer young people a sense of empowerment

PROJECT ACTIVITIES

•  Looking at our own environments, Creating postcards responding to the question-where do you live and how best would you describe it.

•  Print outs which were self portraits. Each participant created their dream characters , they could be whatever they liked and also take on board dreams they have for themselves

•  Choose one thing you like and one thing you dislike about the place you live. Then make a cartoon strip, create a story around this subject matter. Use the imaginary dream characters created in the coloured photocopy portraits in your cartoon strip story

•  We looked at some short films made about stories in which people look and often imagine the situations they hear about in other countries "11/9/01' was a series of short films made on commission by 11 filmmakers from different countries on the subject matter of the attack on the world trade towers in New York. We discussed the idea of reality when it exists outside your own community and in other parts of the work.

•  Looking at trade as something that ties many countries together we played a 'Trade Game' This game involves dividing the group into 3 smaller groups and the distributing tools - scissors, raw Materials, paper. It becomes clear from playing the game the economically poorer countries may often have lots of raw materials but without the tool &/technology they cannot make products and compete on a profitable level of the world market.

•  We then discussed Trocaire's Millennium Development Goals looking at each one individually. We posed three questions Where ? Why? How? We looked at and read through some case studies from which highlight realities outside of our own . Through performances, each group was given three millennium goals to interpret and incorporate into a story line.
