LIBRARY BUS GRAFFITI

The coolest bus
Nov 2006- April 2007

PROJECT SUMMARY
In November of 2006 Mary Fitzgerald from Mayfield Public Library invited young people from our Youth Programme to redesign the local mobile library bus. It was due for repainting so she had the great idea of asking local young people to take it on as a project. During our after-school workshops we worked together to come up with concepts and designs on the theme of reading. We chose to use spray paint and designed a number of stencils. We also chose a few thoughtful quotes which related to books, knowledge and reading and we made these into stencils too.
In the new year we painted the bus and applied our stencils. It was hard work in the spring weather but the group persevered and finished in April when it was launched by the City Librarian Liam Ronayne.

ACTIVITIES
The main medium was stencil graffiti, this medium was used to express the theme of “dreams…”.
We used Digital photographs and images from the internet on Photoshop to create the stencils then we used a data projector to trace the stencils onto A2 size card. After tracing them we cut them out with craft blades.
We painted the blue and black background with rollers and gloss paint. The rest was done using spray paint.
