As a result of the project “Mural Training for Youth Empowerment” a core group of participants from the Development Education After Schools programme designed a project that they wanted to do together to share more of what they had learned in Nicaragua. They applied to Leargas for Youth Initiative funding to run a summer camp for local children.
The project began in May 2007. The teenagers received training in leadership, facilitation and art skills in four different techniques: Music, drama, mural painting and puppet-making. In July the summer camp began and the teenagers worked as assistant facilitators with the support of an artist.
During the workshops with the children the theme of rights was explored and expressed in a series of murals painted on canvas. The summer camp ended with an exhibition of all the work and photographs of the process.
In September the group followed the project up with visits to local primary schools to showcase the work produced.
